Music Therapy

by Amy Snyder

Music, what do we think of when we hear that word ? Well we dance to it of course. We all know there are different types of music, but how can music help us you might ask.  Music therapy can reduce stress, pain, enhance restful sleep, lower our blood pressure, improve our memory, and boost immune response. Music therapy is an established healthcare proffesion that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals of all ages. Music therapy improves the quality of life for persons who are well and meets the needs of children and adults with disabilities or illnesses. Music therapy interventions can be designed to promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, express feelings, enhance memory, improve communication, and promote physical rehabilitation. Some of us like different sounds, maybe you may like the sound of rain and thunder, or you may like the sound of birds chirping or the sound of the oceans waves. Most likely if you like these sounds you will be able to find them on disc at a store near you. I myself have fallen asleeep to the sounds of thunder cd. I found it to be quite relaxing and peaceful. There is also a website that I found called amethyst records .com. It is a fairly newer site, the amethyst is known as a healing stone. It is often used as a symbol of recovery from addiction. Amethyst records produces original music designed to be enjoyable and meaningful for everyone. However the music they produce and distribute is especially designed to reach out and connect with those suffering from or in recovery from addiction. This includes co-addicts, those in a relationship with addicts and people from dysfunctional families. If you are bipolar and reading this well you know that usually having bipolar coincides with having a substance abuse problem. Because we tend to self-medicate. Please feel free to visit this website, you can also order cdís from there, if you are interested. There is also another site that I came across called Hymns music therapy. It is an emotional and spiritual support for lifeís challenges. This site will explain the power of music therapy. It can help you with lifeís daily struggles. You may be having to grieve over a loved one, or you may be having family problems, or whatever your situation may be this site will be able to help you. Listening to the piano can be very soothing, the piano produces beautiful music, and is so relaxing. Another soothing album is Van Morrisonís Moondace. It was also listed as being one of the top romantic albums. There is music for different occasions never the less. I myself love music, I like to go and karaoke. I would choose to listen to music anyday over watching the television. So if you ever find yourself in a stressful situation next time think of turning on the stereo, or listening to one of your favorite cdís to help soothe and relax you. Music can do wonders for our souls.
