Q: Physiology of Salt Cravings
I have had severe salt cravings, (to the point I truly consider it an addiction) especially premenstrually (definitely more severe than carb cravings).
In the past I found that Wellbutrin knocked out these cravings. I was surprised
by this but not shocked because of it's use for nicotine cravings.
I am currently on lamictal only and found that that when my depression is under
control, so are my craving for salt.
Questions-
I was wondering if you know and could explain the physiology behind this.
Is this more likely to be a completely idiosyncratic effect, or may this have
broader implications?
Do you think any drug that is an effective antidepressant for me would do the
same thing?
Thanks,
Ms C
Dear Ms. C' --
Although I'm filing this in my head as "interesting", to listen for it in the
future, I'm afraid I have no idea at all as to how this might be explained
physiologically (a rare admission, not even to venture a guess!). So I can't
address your latter questions either. Sorry. Interesting.
