Q: Could Paxil be Proper Med for Husband
My husband was diagnosed with bipolar about four years ago, he was
put on paxil and not the drugs associated with this disorder. I was curious how
paxil could be the proper medication for him?
Dear Ms. W' --
In my business there are no clear "rules". I was just lamenting
today our lack of solid ground for our diagnoses. Because we lack same (as
you probably know, our diagnoses are just based on lists of symptoms that seem
to cluster together most of the time), almost any treatment can be justified if
it works and does not cause too much in the way of side effects. Your
understanding of bipolar treatment is correct -- but if he was doing well, I
doubt that too many psychiatrists would change his medications. Note the
repetition of "if he's doing well".
