Q:  PCOS and Bipolar Disorder

This is not a question--just a response to your interest in polycystic ovarian syndrome and its connection with bipolar. Thank you for pursuing this! I was diagnosed bipolar three years ago at the age of 38--each time I went off depakote so that we could begin to have children I had an episode. This past spring I was diagnosed with PCOS and put on a low level of metformin (glucophage) instead of depakote--I have seen amazing results. I am completely symptom-free and we are pursuing our dream of having children. I know there is a connection between these two disorders...if there is any way I can  help you in your study I would be more than happy to. I am a professional writer and psychotherapist.

Sincerely

Thank you, Ms. S'.  I'm glad to hear of yet more evidence of this connection.  I haven't been back through the PCOS sites lately, but was surprised when I did that about a year ago not to find people remarking on some sort of connection with mood symptoms.  The focus was on hirsutism and infertility.  Every once in a while there would be some mention of mood stuff, very low key.  I wonder if this only affects some women with PCOS, perhaps those who are already susceptible to mood symptoms anyway?  There's certainly a precedent for that, e.g. with menopausal or PMS-type mood symptoms, where we know now it's the same "normal" hormonal fluctuations that can produce symptoms in some and no symptoms in others.  Thanks for your encouragement.  Email me any new insights you come across in your learning.
