Neurontin/Bipolar Disorder

Q: I have recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. As treatment, my pyshiatrist started me on Neurontin 300mg three times a day. Being a pharmacy technician for many years, I have not heard of this drug being used in the treatment of this disorder. I have surfed all over the web and cannot find any evidence to uphold this to be true. Are you familiar with such treatment and if so can you tell me if this is a proper treatment plan. Thank you for your time.

Dear Ms. S. --
You are correct to wonder about this medication: there are no strong data to support its use as a mood stabilizer.  See my paragraph about Neurontin for my concerns.  Lithium and Depakote are the first line agents, by almost anyone's account in this business.  See the new (2000) expert concensus guidelines about which medications are preferred.  You're welcome.
